En 1961, Lucky Luciano, chef de la mafia new-yorkaise, la Cosa Nostra, dans les années 1930, dicte ses mémoires au producteur Martin Gosch et au journaliste Richard Hammer. Il mourra peu après en Sicile, son pays d'origine. Des années folles aux années 1960, le livre retrace la vie d'une légende de la pègre mondiale, Luciano ayant aussi servi de modèle au personnage du Parrain de F.F. Coppola.
